Jasmin Hundal: AI in Oncology – A Tool, Not a Replacement
Jasmin Hundal, Chair of Hematology-Oncology Research Fellowship Working Group at Cleveland Clinic, shared a post on LinkedIn about an article she co-authored with Matthew Kurian, published in ASCO Connection:
“AI in Oncology: A Tool, Not a Replacement.
Artificial intelligence is no longer a future concept. It is here, and it is changing how we practice oncology. From improving HER2 scoring to streamlining documentation and powering predictive tools like the ArteraAI Prostate Test, AI is being integrated across the cancer care continuum.
Yet as clinicians and trainees, our responsibility is not just to use these tools but to use them wisely.
In our recent ASCO Connection article, Matthew Kurian and I, explore the clinical, legal, and ethical considerations of AI use in oncology. It poses a fundamental question: Are we adequately preparing ourselves and our institutions for the real-world integration of AI in oncology practice?
That means:
- Understanding institutional policies before engaging
- Recognizing AI limitations, especially hallucinations and misinformation
- Learning to prompt effectively
- Staying grounded in clinical judgment, not automation
Just as we once learned to navigate electronic health records, we must now build fluency in AI, starting with foundational education across fellowships, CME, and clinical onboarding.
Patients are already using AI to guide their decisions. If we are not equipped to join that conversation, we risk losing both trust and relevance.
As we navigate this evolving landscape, I would love to hear how leaders in oncology and digital health are thoughtfully integrating AI into their workflows and training programs.”
Douglas Flora, Executive Medical Director of Oncology Services at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, shared this post, adding;
“Love you leading these important discussions, Jasmin Hundal and Matthew Kurian. Your next essay needs to go in AI in Precision Oncology – we need content on evolution of Med Ed!”
