ICP leads integration of cancer policy into health education – King’s Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine
King’s Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The Institute of Cancer Policy (ICP) at King’s, led by Professors Richard Sullivan, Ajay Aggarwal, and Dr Julie S. Torode, continues to shape the global conversation on cancer control by developing educational resources that integrate policy, systems, and service-level perspectives into oncology training.
With cancer policy now widely recognised as a critical pillar of cancer control, the ICP’s research has underpinned several Lancet and Lancet Oncology Commissions, while also informing national strategies and practice across sectors and settings.
Building on this, the ICP has turned its attention to education, co-developing new global learning materials that bring cancer policy principles into the mainstream of health education. A key example is the upcoming Cancer Systems and Control for Health Professionals, published by Wiley.
Co-Edited by Professor Richard Sullivan, the text offers a comprehensive systems-based approach to cancer control and policy. The textbook can be preordered here.
The ICP has also worked in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London and the The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), co-authoring the recently published and first dedicated ‘Cancer and Policy’ chapter in the 8th edition of Treatment of Cancer (Taylor and Francis), a core oncology textbook.
This chapter explores how policy shapes cancer services and systems – for example, influencing the delivery of new technologies to improve outcomes, ensure sustainability through affordable care, and promote equity.
It marks the first time that a major cancer education textbook has dedicated space to this critical topic. This textbook can be purchased here.
Through its research and collaborations, the ICP has influenced cancer strategies and contributed to global discussions on cancer control. By developing these new educational resources, the ICP is ensuring that cancer policy becomes a core component of health professionals’ training.”
