Gustavo Viani: No Difference in Coronary artery disease Risk for Left- vs. Right-Sided Breast Cancer Treatment
Gustavo Viani, Associate Professor at the University of São Paulo, shared on LinkedIn:
“Modern Radiotherapy Shows no Difference in Coronary artery disease Risk for Left- vs. Right-Sided Breast Cancer Treatment.
Objective: To determine whether there is a difference in the risk of developing or worsening coronary artery disease (CAD) in breast cancer (BC) patients receiving left- versus right-sided external beam chemotherapy (EBRT)
Methods:
• Conducted a meta-analysis by reviewing studies from January 1999 to September 2022 (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus)
• Included studies using a consistent metric to identify CAD.
• Computed the risk ratio (RR) using a random effects model
• Analyzed an institutional cohort of high cardiovascular-risk BC patients (2010-2022), applying a Cox proportional hazards model
Results:
• Meta-analysis of 9 studies: Left-sided BC patients had a 10% increased risk of CAD compared to right-sided (RR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.02-1.18, P = .01).
• Subgroup analysis (6 studies, post-1980 diagnoses): No significant difference in CAD risk based on BC laterality (RR: 1.07, 95% CI: 0.95-1.20, P = .27)
• Institutional cohort: No significant difference in CAD risk for left- vs right-sided BC (HR: 0.73, 95% CI: 0.34-1.54, P = .402).”
