“My poem ‘Forty’ is now published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology’s Art of Oncology section, along with a companion episode of JCO Cancer Stories:
The Art of Oncology.
I have spent my career on the administrative side of cancer care, where the work lives in access, capacity, wait times, and budgets. This poem comes from the other side of that. I wrote it as a brother.
Ten years ago, my sister was cared for by the team at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and I carry what they gave our family for those thirteen months into every decision I make now at University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC).
The patients we serve here on the border deserve the same tenderness she received.
