Debra Patt on the Importance of Policy Engagement in Oncology at ASCO 2025

Debra Patt, Chair of the AI Task Force and a Board Member for the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), shared a post on LinkedIn:

“You’re either at the table or on the menu.
-Al Capone (and Steve Paulson)
We are in an unprecedented time of policy change that could impact the patients we serve together. While often doctors don’t engage in public policy, it is so important to the nature of what we do. Like with our patients, with elected officials and their staff we are educators and guides to better solutions.
In my 20 years of clinical practice, I have never met an elected official or their staff that wanted cancer patients to have poor outcomes, diminished access, to suffer, or to have challenges navigating the healthcare landscape. And yet, frequently policy makers have limited understanding of the natural consequences of policy on these issues. Healthcare is in fact quite complicated. One forum for engagement is in the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) communities of practice.
Come and join us today. I will be speaking with Blase Polite, Jasmine Kamboj, Laurie Matt-Amaral, Brian Persing, Narjust Florez, Jonathan Ticku, Hesham ElGhazaly, Josh Pritchett, Martin Palmeri, Noha Soror, Nazli Dizman. Appreciate the advocacy in the cancer community – Community Oncology Alliance, Jeff Mortier, The US Oncology Network.”
