Colibactin: a potential clue to EOCRC – Fight Colorectal Cancer

Fight Colorectal Cancer shared a post on X:

“A new study in Nature points to colibactin – a DNA-damaging toxin made by certain E. coli strains as a potential clue to EOCRC. Colibactin-linked mutations were found to be 3.3 times more common in CRC patients under 40 compared to those over 70. We asked our board member and researcher, Cathy Eng, about this study. She said this suggests, but does not prove, that E. coli infection may contribute to early-onset CRC. More research is needed and ongoing. Stay tuned.”

Fight Colorectal Cancer shared findings from a study published in Nature identifying colibactin, a DNA-damaging toxin from specific E. coli strains, as a possible contributor to early-onset colorectal cancer. Cathy Eng, board member and researcher, emphasized that while the data suggest a link, further research is necessary to confirm causality.
