Charles A. Schiffer, Professor of Medicine and Oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Karmanos Cancer Institute received the 2024 ASH Mentor Award.
Each year, ASH recognizes two exceptional hematologists for their long-standing dedication to mentorship, encompassing areas such as intellectual growth, career development, professional support, advocacy, and serving as positive role models.
This year the 2024 ASH Mentor Awards recipients were Stephen D. Nimer and Charles A. Schiffer
The recipients of the ASH Mentor Award make a profound impact on their mentees, guiding them in advancing research and patient care while also helping them navigate the personal and professional challenges they encounter.
Charles A. Schiffer
Dr. Charles A. Schiffer is a Professor of Medicine and Oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Michigan. He is the director of the Leukemia/Lymphoma Multidisciplinary Program, where he leads efforts in clinical research and treatment for leukemia and lymphoma.
Dr. Schiffer has authored over 300 articles and 80 book chapters, contributing significantly to the understanding of leukemia treatment, platelet and granulocyte transfusion therapies, and related topics.
He has served on numerous editorial boards, including for Blood, Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Transfusion, and has reviewed for multiple prestigious journals. His leadership roles have included Chairing the Leukemia Committee of the Cancer and Leukemia Group B, as well as the FDA Oncologic Drug Advisory Committee.
Dr. Schiffer has been named among America’s top doctors by American Health Magazineand Castle Connolly, and he received the Dr. John J. Kenney Award from the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society of America in 2006.
A recipient of multiple teaching awards, he was also inducted into the Academy of Scholars at Wayne State University, the highest honor given to faculty at the institution.
Education
Dr. Charles A. Schiffer received his M.D. from New York University School of Medicine in 1972, where he was awarded the prestigious New York State Regents Scholarship. He completed his B.A. cum laude at Brandeis University in 1968.
Dr. Schiffer’s postgraduate training includes serving as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine at New York University School of Medicine from 1971 to 1972, after completing his residency and internship in Internal Medicine at Bellevue Hospital and the Manhattan VA Hospital in New York City from 1968 to 1971.
