Celia Diez de los Rios on the Importance of Clarity, Compassion, and Evidence in Cancer Care
Celia Diez de los Rios, Research Fellow at University of Glasgow, shared on LinkedIn about a recent paper by Sonia Paytubi et al. published on BMJ:
“As I posted last week about sencionalism cancer posts and had a bit of a chat with Mike Kinnaird and many others (thank you everyone for an amazing and engaged discussion) I remembered a study I saw on 2022 that back then made me smile
That BMJ study explored cancer beliefs among anti-vaxxers, flat-earthers, and – yes – reptilian conspiracists.
Behind every myth there’s usually fear, mistrust, or the simple human need to make sense of something terrifying. And what feels absurd to someone might be someone else’s truth. Everyone looks for a cause. As I have seen how giving a hereditary cancer diagnosis has made people feel relieved because they found the why others keep looking for their ‘why’. And fear loves a story.
That makes our role as nurses even more important: to bring clarity, compassion, and evidence when people feel lost.
To reduce the white noise (Dr Maria Cable words), fear and anxiety (Catherine Schopfer), the overstatement (Cindy Körner) to help people to make better choices of how they consume information (Sue Milne ACMA CGMA), to improve emotional wellbeing (Bami Adenipekun) and to work with others to find a way to put the breaks on this sensationalist phemonenon (Kash Baden).
I was hesitant about my post until I saw all your comments, thank you.
Cancer care isn’t just about treatments. It’s about truth, empathy, and shared understanding.
The BMJ article.”
