Meet the winners of the 2023 Awards for Excellence in Cancer Research
The Canadian cancer society announced their recipients for the 2023
This year’s CCS Awards for Excellence in Cancer Research recognize the outstanding achievements of 8 leading cancer researchers in Canada.
Dr. John Bell is a Senior Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. He is a Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Immunology at the University of Ottawa.
John Bell is a recipient of the Lifetime Contribution Prize! Lifetime Contribution Prize is for an individual who, through vision and leadership, has enhanced the Canadian cancer research landscape to benefit people with cancer .
Dr. Mandana Vahabi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biology at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University).
Dr. Mandana Vahabi is a recipient of the Inclusive Excellence Prize. Inclusive Excellence Prize is for an individual who has demonstrated leadership in the advancement of equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility as it relates to the cancer research ecosystem in Canada.
Jacques Simard is full Professor in the Department of Molecular Medicine at Université Laval’s Faculty of Medicine. From 2001 to 2022, he held the Canada Research Chair in Oncogenetics. He is currently Vice-Dean of Research and Innovation at Université Laval’s Faculty of Medicine.
Jacques Simard is a recipient of the O. Harold Warwick Prize. O. Harold Warwick Prize is for outstanding achievements in cancer control research.
Dr. Peter Dirks is a Senior Scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and a Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Sheila Singh is a Professor in the Department of Surgery and the Department of Biochemistry at McMaster University. She is a Director of the Surgeon-Scientist Program, Director of the Pediatric Brain Tumour Study Group, and Director of the Centre for Discovery in Cancer Research (CDCR).
Dr Peter Dirks and Dr Sheila Singh are a co-recipients of the Robert L. Noble Prize. Robert L. Noble Prize is for outstanding achievements in basic biomedical cancer research.
Dr. Ryan Morin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Simon Fraser University (SFU).
Dr Adam Shlien
Dr. Adam Shlien is a Director in Genome Diagnostics and a Senior Scientist in the Genetics and Genome Biology program at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).
Dr Ryan Morin and Dr Adam Shlien are a co-recipients of the Bernard and Francine Dorval Prize. Bernard and Francine Dorval Prize is for an early-career investigator whose outstanding contributions to basic biomedical research have the potential to lead, or have already led, to improved understanding of cancer treatments and/or cure.
Fiona Schulte is an Associate Professor in the Department of Oncology, Division of Psychosocial Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. She is also a registered psychologist in the Hematology, Oncology and Transplant Program at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.
Dr Fiona Schulte is a recipient of the William E. Rawls Prize. William E. Rawls Prize is for an early-career investigator whose outstanding contributions have the potential to lead, or have already led, to important advances in cancer control.
