Brian E. Persing is running for the Board of Directors of ASCO

Brian E. Persing is a candidate for a position on the Board of Directors for ASCO.

The ASCO Nominating Committee has selected 13 distinguished members as candidates for leadership positions within the Society.

ASCO encourages all eligible members to vote for the new leaders of the Society.
Eligible members include those holding a Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathy, Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Pharmacy, Doctor of Medical Science, Doctor of Nursing Science, Doctor of Nursing Practice, or an equivalent doctoral-level degree recognized by the Society and the Association, and who are in good standing as of October 14, 2024. Voting in the ASCO Election will earn eligible members a FASCO point.

The voting period ends on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 3:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. All ballots, whether submitted online or by paper, must be received by this deadline.

Brian E. Persing, MD, FASCO, is a physician at the Singing River Health System.

The Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (FASCO) distinction recognizes members for their volunteer engagement, and commitment to ASCO.

Brian E. Persing, MD is an oncologist with extensive experience in medical oncology, hematology, and clinical education.

Currently, he holds multiple leadership roles, including the Arlene and Mayer Mitchell Chair of Medical Oncology and Division Chair of Hematology/Oncology at USA Health’s Mitchell Cancer Institute (since May 2022).

Additionally, Dr. Persing served as Interim Program Director for the Medical Oncology Fellowship Program at the University of South Alabama Health from March 2021 to June 2023 and has been the Assistant Program Director for the Hematology and Oncology Fellowship Program since July 2023.

He also holds an appointment as Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Clinical Oncology at Mitchell Cancer Institute, a position he has held since 2020, and serves as an adjunct professor at William Carey University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine since 2011.

Dr. Persing’s clinical expertise extends across a broad spectrum of oncology care, having worked at various institutions.

He has been affiliated with the University of South Alabama Health and Mitchell Cancer Institute since 2020. His previous roles include positions at Southern Cancer Center (2009–2011) and Singing River Health System Regional Cancer Center (2011–2020).

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Persing has an active research background, having participated in medical and research training at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine in 1999 and 2001, focusing on patient understanding of prescription medication information.

He is an active member of several prestigious professional organizations, including the American College of Physicians (ACP), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Society of Hematology (ASH), and the Mississippi Oncology Society (MOS), among others.

Dr. Persing is also involved with the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) and the American Medical Association (AMA), reflecting his commitment to advancing the field of oncology through both clinical practice and professional collaboration.

Education

Dr. Brian E. Persing received his M.D. from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine in Vermillion, South Dakota.

He also earned a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of South Dakota, graduating in May 1998.

Following his medical school education, Dr. Persing completed his internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, from July 2002 to June 2003.

He then continued his residency in Internal Medicine at the same institution from July 2003 to June 2005. Dr. Persing pursued specialized training in Hematology and Oncology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he completed his fellowship from July 2006 to June 2009.
