“February Issue: Improving Recurrence Prediction in Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma: The Synergistic Impact of the FIB-4 Index and Tumor Burden Score on Post-hepatectomy Outcomes.”
Authors: Miho Akabane et al.
A study published in the February issue of Annals of Surgical Oncology highlights the role of the Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index in predicting outcomes for patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) after liver surgery. Researchers analyzed data from 1,168 patients (2000–2020) and grouped them based on their Tumor Burden Score (TBS) and FIB-4 index.
Results showed that patients with a high FIB-4 index had a greater risk of cancer recurrence and worse overall survival, regardless of TBS. High-risk patients (high TBS/high FIB-4 index) had the worst outcomes, with a significantly higher recurrence rate and lower survival compared to low-risk patients.
The study suggests that both tumor-related and liver health factors should be considered when assessing recurrence risk and survival. Using the FIB-4 index alongside traditional measures may help identify high-risk patients who need closer monitoring or additional treatment.
