Alain Labrique: How We Can Better Integrate AI into the Design and Execution of Clinical Trials
Alain Labrique, Director of Department of Digital Health and Innovation at World Health Organization, posted on LinkedIn:
“Proud to share our latest piece in The Lancet Group Digital Health on how we can better integrate AI into the design and execution of clinical trials.
Too often, we see high-potential AI tools fail to translate into meaningful clinical impact—not because the algorithms don’t work, but because they’re not embedded in real-world contexts. In this paper, we propose the AI–Healthcare Integration Framework (AI-HIF)—a structured approach to guide the responsible, effective use of AI in trials.
This isn’t about chasing hype. It’s about asking:
- Are we designing with end-users in mind?
- Are we validating across diverse populations?
- Are we planning for real deployment, monitoring, and governance?
At WHO, we’re committed to helping countries adopt AI that is ethical, evidence-based, and equitable. I hope this contribution supports the global conversation on how to move from pilots to scalable, trustworthy systems.”
