Olivier Elemento: AI in Hematology – A 2025 Snapshot from ASH
Olivier Elemento, Director, Englander Institute for Precision Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, shared on LinkedIn about a review published on Blood:
“AI in Hematology: A 2025 Snapshot from ASH
I’m pleased to share our new review, “Artificial Intelligence in Hematology,” now available in Blood! This was a significant collaborative effort, and I want to give a special shout-out to Aziz Nazha, who spearheaded this review, and to all the dedicated members of the American Society of Hematology’s Artificial Intelligence Subcommittee.
Our work details how AI can integrate diverse data – from imaging, pathology, and omics to lab results—to improve diagnostic accuracy, risk stratification, and treatment response prediction. We cover advancements in the automated analysis of blood smears, bone marrow aspirates, and flow cytometry data, which hold the potential to make diagnostics more efficient and reproducible.
What makes this review particularly timely is its forward-looking perspective. We explore the impact of Generative AI for developing new therapeutic strategies and creating “digital twins” of patients to model disease trajectories in silico. The paper even includes future concepts like Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), placing current work in the context of the technology’s long-term trajectory. I think this broad view is important for understanding where the field is headed.
We also remain grounded in the practical challenges that hinder clinical implementation. I think it is essential to address these barriers, which include data quality issues, algorithmic bias, and the need for robust regulatory and evaluation frameworks to ensure these tools are safe and equitable for all patients.
Ultimately, we conclude that future hematologists will need to work with these tools to enhance diagnostic capabilities and deliver more personalized care.
