SIOPE BTG and ISPNO Highlights by Andrea Carai
Andrea Carai, Chief of Neurosurgical Oncology Unit at Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital, shared the following post on LinkedIn:
“ISPNO2024 in Philadelphia has concluded!
21st International Symposium on Pediatric Neuro-Oncology and the Annual Brain Tumor Group of SIOP Europe, was hosted by Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
I presented on “Virtual reality assistance in the management of pediatric brain tumors.”
SIOPE BTG Highlights:
- Surgical randomization to reduce morbidity of IV ventricle surgery in medulloblastoma
- Nanoporetechnology is a promising solution to obtain molecular diagnosis within 1 hour using fresh tissue from surgery
- Imaging automation to assist in objectively assessing treatment response and volumetric changes of residual tumors
- Liquid biopsies being enforced to explore the possibility to detect minimal residual disease (MRD) and monitor risk factors for relapse and stratify treatment response. Surgeons at the forefront of biological sample collection.
ISPNO Highlights:
- CAR-T immunotherapy is rapidly evolving to improve efficacy and reduce toxicity
- Risk adapted radiation doses are being explored to improve long-term neurocognitive performance of survivors of malignant tumors
- Lifelong integrated rehabilitation programs are increasingly being proposed to maximize independent life of survivors
- The strong rationale of target therapies should not prevent careful efficacy and toxicity monitoring.
- International cooperation is warranted to improve sharing information.”
