Penn researchers found significant racial disparities in who gets treated with CAR T cell therapy, which involves genetically modifying white blood cells to attack cancer. Study author Marco Ruella, MD, an assistant professor of Hematology-Oncology, is working with Carmen Guerra, MD, associate director of Diversity and Outreach for the Abramson Cancer Center, to understand why the disparities exist and develop a plan to ensure all patients can benefit from the transformative therapy. Guerra notes that these particular barriers ‘are more pronounced because CAR-T is such a uniquely complicated therapy.’ ”
