David Sebag-Montefiore: PROSPECT compared chemotherapy with chemoradiation. There was greater acute toxicity with pre-op chemotherapy.
David Sebag-Montefiore, the Clinical Director of Leeds Cancer Research Centre, shared on LinkedIn:
“The title “Skipping radiation before rectal cancer surgery” is highly misleading – PROSPECT compared chemotherapy with chemoradiation. There was greater acute toxicity with pre-op chemotherapy.
More importantly, around 40% enrolled would not require either treatment pre-operatively according to ESMO – European Society for Medical Oncology, international guidelines – thus significant over-treatment.
The findings from this study demonstrate that two drug chemo is an alternative option to CRT for a defined relatively small subset of rectal cancer patients and has an alternative but significant side effect profile.”
