Omar AbdiHamid: The First data on the patterns of esophageal cancer in northern Kenya at the Garissa Cancer Center
Omar AbdiHamid, Clinical Oncology Specialist at HCGCCK Cancer Centre, recently posted on LinkedIn:
“Just Published in the Journal of ecancer. The First data on the patterns of esophageal cancer in northern Kenya at the Garissa Cancer Center. We found lots of gaps in the care pathway of this debilitating and most common cancer in the region including:
- Late-stage presentation due to lack of community education on the risks of unchecked symptoms.
- Predominantly nomadic and rural communities.
- Large numbers of patients are lost to follow up.
- Lack of health insurance.
- Low uptake in esophageal cancer surgeries due to low volume cases and surgical oncology expertise.
- Majority of the patients were of ethnic Somalis.
- Low overall survival due to late stage presentation.”
