“NEJM AI and the team at Dana-Farber Cancer Center just published a great case study in which they revealed some insights following the (careful) deployment of generative AI, in this particular case, GPT-4 – across the institution. The project, supported by the Generative AI Governance Committee at Dana-Farber, provides a great construct for integrating state-of-the-art AI technologies into healthcare, particularly for cancer, always respecting the standards of ethical, legal, and regulatory aspects.
The paper “GPT-4 in a Cancer Center – Deployment Challenges and Lessons Learned” discusses a multifaceted approach to the consideration and implementation of Large Language Models (LLMs) within the complex ecosystem of oncological care. It raises the potential for LLMs to be the means by which healthcare delivery is transformed, from the production of clinical documentation to providing empathic responses to patients’ questions about their medication. They also cover some of the challenges, from those of data privacy and model interpretability to the very complexity of changing clinical workflows.
Kudos to Isaac Kohane and the NEJM AI team for continuing to publish important work that inspires the rest of us to follow in their footsteps. Those of us at AI in Precision Oncology are working hard to share work like this in every way we can, as we all hope to build an AI-enabled healthcare future where the promise of AI is realized and the pitfalls avoided.
“The enormous potential for generative pretrained transformers (GPTs) and other artificial intelligence (AI) large language models (LLMs) to improve health care has become increasingly clear.” Indeed!”
