Excited to see our work in print. An incredible collaborative effort between patients and research team which began in 2014 trying to understand lesser known risk factors to developing intra (ICC) and extrahepatic (ECC) cholangiocarcinoma CCA.

Why did we conduct this research? More than 1/2 of pts diagnosed with CCA do not have an identifiable known risk factor such as from chronic inflammation due PSC, choledochal cysts, HBV/HCV, parasites etc. We wanted to take a closer look at other risk factors.

Methods: 121 ECC and 308 ICC patients enrolled along with 1061 non-related controls without cancer at MDACC between 2014-2020.

What we found:

– Asian ancestry, T2DM, gallstones ⬆️ risk
– Early adulthood obesity (age 40-60) ⬆️ CCA risk and was associated w a 3x risk of developing ICC + being dx with CCA at a younger age
-Fam hx (particularly paternal) was important: w/a 30% ⬆️ risk of ECC and 11% ICC.

Conclusion: Further research on the environmental and genetic interactions in CCA are needed. Germline genetic testing should be considered particularly with positive family history.
