Patrick Hwu: This study demonstrates the importance of vaccine route when designing cancer immunotherapies
Patrick Hwu, President and CEO at Moffitt Cancer Center, posted on X/Twitter:
“For cancer vaccines to be effective, they need to generate tumor reactive T cells capable of migrating into tissues. Does vaccine route of administration matter? In this study, investigators found that intranasal (mucosal) vaccination resulted in T cells that were capable of infiltrating lung tissue compared to intramuscular vaccination. The mucosal vaccine decreased lung metastases in a murine breast cancer model. The effects were enhanced when the vaccine also encoded IL-1 beta and combined with radiation. This study demonstrates the importance of vaccine route when designing cancer immunotherapies.
