Raphael E. Cuomo: Substance Use and Increased Mortality in Cancer Patients
Raphael E. Cuomo, Professor and Scientist at University of California, posted on LinkedIn:
“Congratulations to Shawnly Khoyilar on publishing research she did as part of my lab! Available in Psycho-Oncology, The Cuomo Lab found increases in mortality for cancer patients who developed opioid, tobacco, amphetamine, and alcohol use disorders. Interestingly, this was not observed for cannabis, adding a novel contribution to our understanding of pre-diagnosis exposures whose effects differ in disease cohorts.
This study was conducted using clinical records from UC San Diego Health and included over 20,000 patients with primary malignancies of the breast, colon, thyroid, liver, and lung.”
