Istvan Petak: Only computational solutions can overcome the challenge of genomic complexity
Istvan Petak, Adjunct Professor at University of Illinois Chicago, shared on LinkedIn:
“Hello, Bangalore, India. Hello, Fortis Healthcare Cancer Summit 2024. Within 24 hours and over 14,000 km from PMWC – Precision Medicine World Conference, I also contributed to the intensive discussion on advancing the cause of precision oncology and making it accessible to cancer patients in India. I am deeply grateful for the organizers’ invitation and Fortis’s hospitality.
In India, despite the available technologically highly advanced service providers, only 1-2% of cancer patients have access to comprehensive molecular profiling, 10% of those tested are treated with a matching targeted therapy, and 4% derive clinical benefits.
Excellent molecular tumor boards are available to discuss the complicated molecular profiles of multiple genetic alterations, but these can not scale to match the unmet need. Only computational solutions can overcome the challenge of genomic complexity and scale up to the number of cancer patients in need.”
