Vinay Prasad: How to actually reduce burnout
Vinay Prasad, Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of California San Francisco, shared a post by JAMA Network Open on X, adding:
“How to actually reduce burnout:
- If a doc doesn’t want to publish research (most academic docs SHOULD NOT) do not make this a req. for promotion
- No more unproven training modules (aka all of them)
- Academic docs should have a reason to be academic- teaching, research..
- Hospital policies should be based on good evidence (vax and mask mandates) — they are not
- Free parking
- More social events
- More in person gatherings
- Better ancillary staff/ support for retainment
- 1:1 administrative assistants
- Less friction for reimbursement/ more per diem options
- Shorten training/ No more additional years
- Instructor positions eliminated. Assistant professor should be default
- Committees/ all service should be paid
- All teachers get a TA

15. Admin should not blindly cave to students increasing demands
16. Admin should be picked by voting among faculty, not current processes, and subject to elections
17. academic freedom absolute
18. more fun debates
All my ideas should be tested by RCT. (See article here)”

“1 in 3 academic physicians report they are considering leaving their institution within 2 years. Burnout and lack of professional fulfillment were associated with intention to leave; a comprehensive approach will be needed to reduce physician turnover.”
