GI Cancers Alliance Introductory Article

The GI Cancers Alliance, founded in 2015, is a global organization representing the gastrointestinal cancer community. It unites patient advocacy groups and collaborates with stakeholders to address unmet needs such as screening, awareness, and treatment.

GI cancers are the most common and deadliest type of cancer, responsible for 1 in 3 cancer deaths worldwide annually. The Alliance represents all GI cancers, including anal, appendix, bile duct, carcinoid tumors, colon, duodenal, esophagus, gastroesophageal junction, gallbladder, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, liver, pancreas, rectal, small intestine, and stomach cancers.

Representing over 120 global advocacy organizations, the GI Cancers Alliance is the voice for the GI cancer community. Through research on patient-reported outcomes, the Alliance identifies and addresses patient education and support gaps. Based on these published studies, we collaborate with member organizations to develop programs that meet patient needs.

The Alliance presented two abstracts/poster presentations at the 2025 American Society of Clinical Oncology Gastrointestinal Symposium (ASCO GI):

1. Patient-reported outcomes in GI cancer: Leading change to meet the needs of the GI community

Journal of Clinical Oncology 43, 2025 (suppl 4; abstr 813) DOI 10.1200/JCO.2025.43.4_suppl. 813

2. Gastric cancer patient insights: Patient-reported outcomes and real-world perspectives

Journal of Clinical Oncology 43, 2025 (suppl 4; abstr 362) DOI 10.1200/JCO.2025.43.4_suppl. 362

One of our priority focus areas for 2025 includes expanding our Test Your Biomarkers campaign. In the first 12 months of the pilot program, the campaign received 1.7 million social media impressions. In 2025, we plan to expand the program to include all gastrointestinal cancers, complete with a resource library of educational information and assets from our advocacy partners and stakeholders.

We are honored to join the OncoDaily community and collaborate with OncoDaily as our official media partner. Together, we will significantly impact our GI cancer community and patients worldwide affected by a gastrointestinal cancer diagnosis,” says Margaret-Ann Simonetta, President of GI Cancers Alliance.
