Dr. Schuchter has been an integral part of Penn Medicine since 1989 when she joined the faculty and established her long-standing association with its melanoma program. Her leadership within the institution has been instrumental in shaping melanoma research and clinical care. In 2007, she was appointed Chief of the Division of Hematology-Oncology at the Abramson Cancer Center, a position she continues to hold. Over the years, she has significantly contributed to advancing oncology through clinical trials, mentorship, and advocacy for women in medicine, making her a highly respected figure in the field.

Currently, Dr. Schuchter serves as the Chief of the Hematology/Oncology Division in the Department of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. She also holds the prestigious title of C. Willard Robinson Professor of Hematology/Oncology and is the Director of the Tara Miller Melanoma Center, where she leads efforts to advance melanoma research and treatment. On this occasion, Dr. Schuchter said: “I am honored to be elected to serve as ASCO’s President. I grew up with ASCO. Volunteering and working with ASCO has been a highlight of my career. I am excited to build on these experiences and lead ASCO, a vital and dynamic organization with so much to offer its members. ASCO is committed to improving the outcomes and the care of our patients, and I am excited to support ASCO across all its missions.”

Dr. Lynn Schuchter chose “The Art and Science of Cancer Care: From Comfort to Cure” as her presidential theme. This theme reflected her belief in the balance between scientific advancements in oncology and the compassionate, patient-centered approach necessary for high-quality care.

Once more she emphasized the importance of cancer care in President’s Address at the 2024 ASCO Annual Meeting. During her speech, she highlighted the remarkable progress in oncology, particularly in melanoma, where immunotherapies and targeted therapies have transformed outcomes. However, she acknowledged the persistent challenges, such as treatment resistance, limited access to care, and the need for better communication in serious conversations. She stressed the importance of early integration of palliative care to enhance patients’ quality of life, noting that only a small percentage of oncologists are dual-certified in oncology and palliative medicine.

Concluding her speech with a toast, Dr. Schuchter raised a glass for Tara Miller and other patients, to the dedication of oncologists, and the power of collaboration in driving progress against cancer, inspiring attendees to continue their vital work in the field.

Research

Dr. Schuchter has dedicated her research to improving treatments for melanoma, focusing on immunotherapy and targeted therapies. She has been deeply involved in clinical trials that have changed the outlook for advanced melanoma, including the work on BRAF-targeted treatments like the combination of dabrafenib and trametinib. Her research has not only helped extend patients’ lives but has also shaped the way doctors approach precision medicine in melanoma care.

A key focus of her work is understanding why some treatments stop working over time. As co-principal Investigator on the Skin Cancer SPORE grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), she leads research aimed at uncovering mechanisms of resistance to therapy. By analyzing serial biopsies, she tracks genetic changes that drive resistance, paving the way for more effective treatments. She has also been at the forefront of exploring CAR T-cell therapy and mRNA vaccines for melanoma. With numerous publications in top medical journals, Dr. Schuchter continues to push the field forward, bringing hope to patients and advancing the science of melanoma treatment.
