Lucjan Wyrwicz: Immunotherapy in cancer is a story of success
Lucjan Wyrwicz, Head of Department, Dept. of Oncology and Radiotherapy at Maria Skłodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center, shared a recent article on LinkedIn:
“Immunotherapy in cancer is (usually) a story of success. The recent innovation in metastatic gastric cancer has completely changed the landscape of treatment here. But some landmark studies can affect our practice even when we fail to improve the outcomes, like cure rate or survival. Academic groups are more likely to get involved in such high-risk scenarios. This was aim of EORTC – European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer study called Vestige by Florian Lordick and Elizabeth Smyth with pan-European representation of key sites dedicated to treatment of gastric cancer patients.
The study is negative – no place for immunotherapy in post-operative / adjuvant setting of high-risk gastric cancer, and still classic chemotherapy should be used, even in patients who benefit less from pre-operative chemotherapy. This is a magic of oncology – and place for clinical research by academic groups like EORTC.
It was important study also for my team at Maria Sklodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology especially Anna Brodziak, Cieszymierz Gawiński and Mariola Winiarek. I hope it is not last study by EORTC – European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer in which we could contribute. Thank you Florian Lordick for invitation to take part in that.”
