Phuong Ly-Gallagher: Incredible program by Josh Neman and Caryn Lerman

“What an absolutely incredible program Dr. Josh Neman has put together! This took great investment in time and effort to show the community that USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center truly cares about people – not just their patients but their whole community.

This took tremendous leadership on the part of Dr. Caryn Lerman to embrace the idea with such enthusiasm and to suggest the right partners to develop a successful first round of the program. Major kudos and congratulations to everyone involved!”

“Cancer neuroscientist Josh Neman, founded the Biomedical Research Apprenticeship Initiative (BRAIN) at USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. The 12-month program provides hands-on lab training to participants from the Beacon House Association, a rehab program for men overcoming addiction.”

Phuong Ly-Gallagher is the Research Advocate Training & Support (RATS) Manager at Fight Colorectal Cancer. She recruits, trains, mentors, and communicates with diverse patient advocates, trains researchers to collaborate with them, and facilitates their involvement in research that meets community needs and priorities. She is also an active advocate for colorectal cancer within charitable organizations.

Josh Neman is the Director of Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination and Co-Leader of the Neuro-Oncology Disease Affinity Group at USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is a tenured Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Keck Medicine of USC and the Scientific Director of the USC Brain Tumor Center. Additionally, he serves as the Director of the Cancer Biology and Genomics Doctoral Program at USC PIBBS and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Breast Cancer Care and Research Fund.

Caryn Lerman is the Director of the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center at Keck Medicine of USC. Before this, she served as Vice Dean of Strategic Initiatives and Interim Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.
