Vedang Murthy: Quality of life among patients with radical cystectomy versus bladder preservation

Hot in BMJ Oncology, our prospective study investigates the bladder cancer treatment dilemma:

Radical cystectomy vs Bladder preservation have Similar survival, but what about quality of life?

Study details: Prospective, cross sectional.

104 patients compared Tools Used: Bladder Cancer Index (BCI) and EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaires.

Looked at urinary, bowel and sexual function.

Key findings:

Good overall QoL in both groups No significant difference in urinary/bowel function.

Both treatments hold up well!

Came as a surprise that patients with a urine bag were doing fine.

Hot take: Sexual function Bladder preservation wins!

Scores: 56.9 vs 41.5 (p=0.01) Better in both function and bother urooncologists.

Study limitations:

Different follow-up times (Sx had longer).

Cross-sectional design All cystectomy patients had ileal conduit.

Take home message: Both treatment have good quality of life.

Discuss QoL with patient when choosing treatment!
