Chris Friese: I appreciate the increased focus on health care worker deaths by suicide.
Chris Friese, Elizabeth Tone Hosmer Professor of Nursing at the University of Michigan, recently shared:
“Trigger Warning: Suicide self-harm
I appreciate the increased focus on healthcare worker deaths by suicide. Important work has been done and we need more. Two points:
1) Nurses are at increased risk for death by suicide.
2) Rates are higher than doctors.
We need an inclusive approach to this problem. I’m seeing folks talk this week about “the first study to…” There is a long and deep literature here. There’s more work to do and we should do it together, such as better work conditions and interventions.
PS: This is a very tough topic and I appreciate the sensitivity. I want ALL healthcare workers supported and cared for. If you or someone you know is in crisis, here are some resources.”
