The first patient in the United States to undergo an experimental treatment for glioblastoma
Leslie Davis, CEO and President at UPMC, shared on LinkedIn:
“Clinical trials bring hope to patients, and we’re proud to deliver innovative therapies that make a difference in people’s lives. It’s core to our mission at UPMC.
Recently, one of our patients became the first in the United States to undergo an experimental treatment for glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer.
Vince Weber, from Imperial, Pa., was rushed to the hospital for what he thought was a stroke. He was diagnosed with glioblastoma, and his care team acted quickly. Just 10 days after diagnosis, he underwent surgery.
UPMC neurosurgeon Dr. Costas Hadjipanayis removed the tumor as he would with a typical glioblastoma, using a fluorescent dye to see the cancer. But this time, he activated the dye with light to kill remaining cancer cells.
Groundbreaking work happens every day at UPMC. We’re so happy Vince is doing well. And we’re pleased to pioneer new treatments that can advance cancer care and help improve survival rates.”
Cyndy Patton, Director of UPMC Public Relations at UPMC, replied:
“This is a story that makes my job in PR amazing! Costas Hadjipanayis is an innovative neurosurgeon who, with neuro-oncologist Dr. Jan Drappatz and our team of neurosurgeons, work every day to bring new treatments to the most aggressive brain cancer. ”
