Reticulocyte Production Index Tweetorial by Aaron Goodman
Aaron Goodman shared on X:
“Reticulocyte Production Index [RPI] Tweetorial
Reticulocytes % is misleading in anemia [Reticulocytes= % of total RBCs]
Reticulocytes % = [Absolute Retic count]/[Total RBC] x 100
Decreased RBC in anemia means increased Reticulocyte.
You must correct for this!
Corrected Reticulocytes = Reticulocytes % x HCT/45, but there is more!
Retics lose RNA in 24 hrs!
Anemic patient EPO to increase retic production and release from marrow!
Takes released retics 2-3 days lose RNA->increased reticulocytes % in blood RPI corrects RPI = [Corrected Retic]/[Maturation Index].
More anemic more retics in blood and more correction needed.”
