Avirup Guha: Cardiovascular risks that young cancer patients face

Avirup Guha, Director of Cardio-Oncology at Georgia Cancer Center, shared a post on X:

“New Study Alert!

‘Cardiovascular Diseases Increase Cancer Mortality in Adults: NHANES‐Continuous Study,’ is now published in JAHA.

We delve into the cardiovascular risks that young cancer patients face.

Cardio-Oncology funded by AHA Science.

Key Finding 1:

Those with CVD have a 37% higher risk of cancer mortality compared to those without CVD.

Key Finding 2:

Obesity amplifies the risk.

Those with both CVD and obesity show 73% higher cancer mortality c/w normal BMI. Addressing obesity is crucial.

Key Finding 3:

Other significant risk factors include aging, current smoking (aHR, 6.78), and lower socioeconomic status.

Key Finding 4:

Interesting finding regarding NLR in Black patients.

Takeaway: Our study underscores the intertwined nature of cardiovascular health and cancer outcomes.

Proactive management of shared risk factors is essential for improving patient survival.”
