The Verspeeten Clinical-Research Fellowship in Stereotactic Radiation

The Verspeeten Clinical-Research Fellowship in Stereotactic Radiation at the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) is a 1-year program designed to provide advanced clinical and research training in Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS). Based at the Verspeeten Family Cancer CentreSouthwestern Ontario’s tertiary cancer centre—the program serves a catchment area of over 1.5 million people and is internationally recognized for its leadership in SABR/SRS and image-guided radiotherapy for lung cancer and oligometastatic disease.

This fellowship is ideal for radiation oncologists interested in developing academic expertise in clinical trials, comparative effectiveness research, and emerging imaging/radiotherapy technologies.

Eligibility Criteria:

Field of Study:
The fellowship offers hands-on clinical experience and research opportunities in:

  • SABR and SRS for oligometastatic and polymetastatic disease
  • Image-guided radiotherapy and technological advances
  • Clinical trial design and execution

Research Focus:
The fellow will lead or contribute to one or more research projects involving:

  • Technology assessment or planning studies related to SABR/SRS
  • Systematic reviews, individual-patient data meta-analyses, and comparative effectiveness research (with support from a biostatistician and library scientist)
  • Secondary analyses of prospectively collected data from completed SABR trials
  • Participation in ongoing clinical trials such as SABR-SYNC and ARREST2
  • Development and initiation of investigator-led clinical studies (optional)

Institutional Setting:
The Division of Radiation Oncology at LHSC includes a multidisciplinary team of clinician scientists, imaging experts, medical physicists, research staff, and clinical trainees. The department supports a dynamic research environment with a strong emphasis on innovation and quality improvement.

Fellowship Details:

  • Duration: 1 year (July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027)
  • Time Distribution:
    • 50% clinical work in SABR/SRS (customized to the fellow’s interests and experience)
    • 50% research, including project development, data analysis, and trial involvement
  • On-call duties: Not required
  • Location: London Health Sciences Centre – London Regional Cancer Program, London, Ontario, Canada

Academic Opportunities:
This fellowship provides in-depth exposure to advanced stereotactic techniques, clinical trials methodology, and technology evaluation. Fellows will gain valuable experience working alongside experienced faculty and may have opportunities for presentation and publication of research projects during or after the fellowship term.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants must meet the following:

  • Hold a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in Radiation Oncology or equivalent specialty training
  • Be eligible for an educational or independent license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)
