The Verspeeten Clinical-Research Fellowship in Brachytherapy

The Verspeeten ClinicalResearch Fellowship in Brachytherapy at the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), Western University, is a 1-year opportunity designed to provide advanced clinical training and research experience in prostate and gynecologic brachytherapy. The program is based at the Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre, the regional oncology referral centre for over 1.5 million people in Southwestern Ontario.

Fellows will be integrated into a multidisciplinary academic team that includes clinician scientists, imaging and medical physics researchers, and a robust clinical trials unit. The program is ideal for individuals interested in pursuing a career in academic radiation oncology with a focus on translational and/or clinical brachytherapy research.

Eligibility Criteria:

Field of Study:
The fellowship offers specialized training in:

  • Prostate brachytherapy
  • Gynecologic brachytherapy
  • Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and/or stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) at other body sites (as per fellow interest)

Research Focus:
Fellows will lead or collaborate on one or more research projects in the following areas:

  • Translational research exploring the integration of novel technologies in brachytherapy
  • Clinical trials involving brachytherapy
  • Systematic reviews, individual-patient data meta-analyses, and comparative effectiveness studies (supported by biostatistics and library science teams)
  • Secondary analyses of existing clinical trial data

Fellows are expected to design, execute, and present/publish at least one major project during their fellowship year.

Institutional Setting:
LHSC’s Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre is a leader in pelvic tumor brachytherapy, with an established infrastructure supporting clinical and translational radiation oncology research. The department fosters strong collaborations across medical physics, imaging, and surgical oncology disciplines.

Fellowship Details:

  • Duration: 1 year (July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027)
  • Time Distribution:
    • 50% clinical work, including hands-on brachytherapy experience
    • 50% research activities
  • Location: London Health Sciences Centre – London Regional Cancer Program, London, Ontario, Canada

Academic Opportunities:
Fellows will gain experience in research methodology and trial conduct through hands-on training, and will have access to mentors and collaborative opportunities across translational and outcomes-based research initiatives. The program can be tailored to the clinical and academic interests of the fellow.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants must meet the following:

  • Hold a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in Radiation Oncology or equivalent training
  • Be eligible for an educational or independent license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)
