NCI: Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA for Individual Predoctoral Fellows

The NCI Ruth L. Kirschstein F31 Award supports promising doctoral candidates pursuing PhD degrees in scientific health-related fields relevant to the mission of the NCI. Applicants must be at the dissertation research stage at the time of award, and their research training plan must demonstrate a clear cancer focus.

Eligibility

  • Enrolled in a PhD or equivalent doctoral program
  • Must be at the dissertation research stage of training
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, noncitizen national, or permanent resident at the time of award
  • Not eligible: Foreign nationals with student visas
  • Must commit full-time effort (at least 40 hours/week)
  • Project must be distinct from sponsor’s existing or pending grants and written primarily by the applicant
  • Training abroad is allowed with clear justification

Grant Term and Budget

  • Duration: Up to 5 years (not generally renewable)
  • 2024 Stipend: 28,224 USD per year
  • Tuition & Fees: 60% of requested amount up to 16,000 USD/year
  • Training-related expenses: Up to 4,750 USD/year for health insurance, research supplies, travel, etc.
  • No funding for research costs; funding to support research must be secured externally

Application Deadlines

  • Cycle 1: April 8, 2025 → Earliest Start: December 2025
  • Cycle 2: August 8, 2025 → Earliest Start: April 2026
  • Cycle 3: December 8, 2025 → Earliest Start: July 2026

Review and Selection

  • Peer-reviewed by CSR and NCI for merit, candidate potential, sponsor training plan, and cancer relevance
  • Award based on priority score, relevance, and funding availability
