The FY26 Lung Cancer Research Program Patient-Centered Outcomes and Survivorship Award supports evidence-based, patient-centered research designed to improve lung cancer outcomes and enhance the experiences of patients, survivors, families, and caregivers.
Eligible studies may address quality of life, treatment side effects, symptom management, psychological well-being, decision-making, comorbidities, rehabilitation, lifestyle interventions, health care delivery, and differences in outcomes among high-risk populations. Translational and clinical research, including pilot clinical trials, may be proposed.
Eligibility Criteria:
- The Principal Investigator must be an independent investigator at any career level.
- Each investigator may serve as PI on only one FY26 Patient-Centered Outcomes and Survivorship Award application.
- Eligible U.S. federal and Department of War organizations may also apply.
- There are no restrictions based on citizenship, nationality, or ethnicity.
- Projects must address at least one FY26 Lung Cancer Research Program area of emphasis for health outcomes and survivorship.
- Animal studies are not supported and will be withdrawn.
- Projects focused exclusively on mesothelioma are not eligible.
Funding Details:
- The maximum award amount is USD 975,000 in total costs.
- The maximum project period is three years.
- Approximately USD 1.95 million is expected to support around two awards.
- Direct and indirect costs must be included within the USD 975,000 total-cost limit.
Deadline:
- Required Letter of Intent deadline: August 18, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
- Full application deadline: September 2, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
- Application verification period ends: September 4, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
- Funding recommendations are generally posted within approximately six weeks after programmatic review.
- Awards are expected to be issued no later than September 30, 2027.
Further Information:
- The Letter of Intent is mandatory but is used only for program planning and reviewer recruitment; it is not competitively screened, and applicants do not need to wait for an invitation before submitting the full application.
- Applications must address long-term or cumulative effects of lung cancer and treatment, the impact of comorbidities on survivorship, or strategies to reduce differences in outcomes among high-risk groups and populations.
- Pilot clinical trial applications must include a Clinical Trial Strategy and plans to begin the study during the first award year, including submission of an FDA IND or IDE application within 60 days of the award when applicable.
