
Canadian Research Society: Next Generation of Scientists Awards
The Next Generation of Scientists (NGS) Award from the Cancer Research Society is a unique three-year funding program designed to support early-career researchers transitioning from postdoctoral fellowships into independent faculty roles in cancer research. The award combines a one-year postdoctoral fellowship with a two-year operating grant to help awardees establish their own research program.
Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents throughout the award period

Postdoctoral fellows must have completed at least 2 years of postdoc training by September 1, 2025

Doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DMV, etc.) must have been obtained after August 31, 2019
-
Must transition to a faculty position in Canada between Jan 1, 2026, and Mar 1, 2027

Applicants must reside in Canada for the duration of Part 2 (Operating Grant)
-
Research must fall within basic, preclinical, prevention, or environmental causes of cancer (clinical trials, applied tools/devices, and psychosocial studies are excluded)
Funding Details

Part 1 – Fellowship: 1-year postdoctoral salary support of $50,000

Part 2 – Operating Grant: $135,000 over 2 years ($67,500/year), contingent on obtaining a faculty position

Eligible expenses include trainee/staff salaries, research supplies, publication fees, and limited travel ($2,500/year)

No-cost extension of up to 6 months may be available for Part 1
