The NCI Transition Career Development Award

The NCI Transition Career Development Award (K22) provides support to mentored, non-independent cancer researchers who are ready to transition into independent, tenure-track faculty roles. The goal is to help promising investigators launch their careers in academic cancer research through a structured three-year award.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a U.S. citizen, noncitizen national, or permanent resident at the time of award

  • Must be a clinical or research fellow in any area of cancer research

  • Must have between 2 and 8 years of mentored, non-independent research training post-terminal degree

  • Must not currently or previously hold a tenure-track faculty position or equivalent

  • Must not currently or previously hold an individual NIH career development award or equivalent

  • Must commit at least 9 person-months (75% full-time effort) to the K22 award

Funding Details

  • Duration: 3 years (non-renewable)

  • Salary support: Up to $100,000/year + fringe benefits

  • Research development support: Up to $50,000/year (includes technical support, consultant costs, supplies, travel, statistical support)

  • Indirect costs: 8%

  • No salary support allowed for mentors, admin assistants, or other ancillary staff

Key Deadlines

  • Application Receipt Cycles:

    • Cycle 1: Feb 12 (new), Mar 12 (resubmission) – Start date: December

    • Cycle 2: Jun 12 (new), Jul 12 (resubmission) – Start date: April

    • Cycle 3: Oct 12 (new), Nov 12 (resubmission) – Start date: July

  • All applications due by 5 PM local time; deadlines extended to next business day if on a weekend/holiday
