
NCI: Paul Calabresi Career Development Award for Clinical Oncology
The NCI Paul Calabresi Career Development Award (K12) supports the training of clinician-scientists (M.D., D.O., Pharm.D., or Ph.D.-level nurses) in clinical and translational cancer research. The program aims to increase the number of well-trained, independent investigators in clinical oncology and allows for participation in or leadership of clinical trials. This award is not intended for laboratory-based research and provides institutional support for up to 5 years. The award is renewable.
Eligibility Criteria
Principal Investigator (PI):

Must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or permanent resident

Must be an established investigator (Associate or Full Professor)
-
Must have active R01 or R01-equivalent cancer-related funding (≥3 years and ≥$150,000/year in direct costs)
Mentors:
-
Must represent a diversity of research disciplines
-
Must have independent R01 or R01-like cancer-focused research support
Scholars:
-
Must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or permanent resident
-
Must hold a clinical degree (M.D., D.O., Pharm.D., or Ph.D. in nursing or equivalent)

Cannot be in residency at the time of award

Must commit a minimum of 9 person-months (75%) full-time effort (surgeon-scientists may request 6–9 months with strong justification)
Funding Details
K12 Program Budget:
-
Up to $750,000/year in direct costs
-
Year 1 capped at $50,000 (for recruitment, advisory board, curriculum planning, etc.)
PI Support:
-
Up to 1.2 person months total for program directors/principal investigators
Scholar Support:
-
Salary: Up to $100,000/year + fringe benefits
-
Research development: Up to $30,000/year
Other Costs:
-
Travel to K12 community conference: $1,500 per person (NOT-CA-20-088)

8% F&A (indirect costs)
