
NCI Mentored Research Scientist Development Award
The NCI Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) supports early career-stage researchers in cancer control, population sciences, and cancer prevention. Eligible applicants include postdoctoral scholars and non-tenured junior faculty (e.g., Assistant Professors). Applicants already promoted to Associate Professor or equivalent are not eligible.
Eligibility
You ARE eligible to submit a proposal if you:
- Are a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence

Are a postdoctoral fellow or non-tenured junior faculty (e.g., Assistant Professor or equivalent)

Commit a minimum of 9 person months (75%) full-time professional effort to the K01 Career Development Award

Plan to conduct research in either:

Cancer Control and Population Sciences (include “NOT-CA-24-022” in box 4B of SF424 R&R form)
-
Cancer Prevention (include “NOT-CA-24-023” in box 4B of SF424 R&R form)

Are within research areas aligned with NCI’s scientific scope for cancer control or prevention
Grant Term and Budget

Duration: Up to 5 years (non-renewable)

Salary: Up to 100,000 USD per year + fringe benefits
-
Research Development Support: Up to 50,000 USD per year (includes tuition/fees, supplies, travel, statistical services)

Indirect Costs: 8%
-
Ancillary Personnel Support (e.g., mentors, admin): Not allowed

Important Notes

The K01 project must be distinct from the mentor’s research grants.

A strong, credible plan for transition to independence is required.

Institutional commitment to career development must be evident.
