American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grants
Institutional Research Grants (IRG) are awarded to eligible institutions as block grants to provide seed funding for newly independent investigators to launch cancer research projects. These funds enable junior faculty to generate preliminary data that will help them successfully compete for national-level research grants. Each institution selects recipients internally through an IRG review committee.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must hold the rank of Associate or Full Professor at a US academic institution
- Must demonstrate a track record of peer-reviewed cancer research funding and publications
- Must have experience mentoring junior investigators
- Must have administrative or leadership experience (e.g., program or department chair)
- Institution must have a strong cancer research program and qualified junior faculty pool
Funding Details
- New IRGs: 120,000 USD per year for 4 years (total 480,000 USD)
- Funds are used to award 3–6 pilot grants annually per institution
- Each pilot grant must be between 20,000 and 60,000 USD
- Year-to-year variation in pilot numbers and amounts is allowed
- Renewal IRGs: 100,000 USD per year for 4 years (total 400,000 USD)
- Renewal applications require at least 80,000 USD in institutional supplementation over 4 years
- Separate application required for renewals in ProposalCentral
