Cancer Research UK Early Detection and Diagnosis Project Award 2026

Cancer Research UK Early Detection and Diagnosis Project Award 2026

Due Date: 12/03/2026

The Cancer Research UK Early Detection and Diagnosis Project Award provides up to £500,000 for ambitious research aimed at detecting and diagnosing consequential pre-cancerous changes and cancers earlier, ultimately reducing the burden of late-stage disease. Projects must demonstrate clear relevance to early detection or diagnosis and a credible pathway toward clinical or population impact.

The program supports research spanning discovery through translational science, including biomarker discovery and validation, early detection technologies, diagnostic tests, clinical trials, health systems research, clinician decision support, public behaviour, and health economics. The current funding rounds also include a strategic spotlight encouraging research addressing inequalities in cancer early detection and diagnosis.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants may be scientists, clinicians, or healthcare professionals.
  • The lead applicant must be based at a UK university, medical school, hospital, or research institute, including Cancer Research UK institutes.
  • Researchers at all career stages may apply.
  • When an early-career researcher is the lead or joint lead applicant, CRUK strongly recommends including an established researcher as a co-applicant for mentorship.
  • Part-time and flexible-working applications may be considered with host-institution approval and prior discussion with CRUK.
  • Applicants may submit the same project to other funding organisations, but if more than one application is successful, only one award may ultimately be accepted.
