Damon Runyon-St. Jude Pediatric Cancer Research Fellowship Award

The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, in partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, is now accepting applications for the 2025 Pediatric Cancer Research Fellowship Award. This four-year fellowship offers funding, mentorship, and career development for early-career scientists committed to discovering new treatments and cures for childhood cancers.

Who is eligible?

Applicants must:

  • Hold an MD, PhD, MD/PhD, DDS, DO, or DVM

  • Apply under a dedicated Sponsor with a tenured/tenure-track position

  • Meet one of the following eligibility tracks:

    • Level 1: Received doctoral degree within 36 months; in Sponsor’s lab ≤2 years

    • Level 2: Physician-scientists who completed clinical training within 2 years; in Sponsor’s lab ≤4 years

  • Commit 100% (Level 1) or 80% (Level 2) effort to research

  • Conduct research at a U.S.-based university, hospital, or academic research institution

  • Not currently hold another postdoctoral fellowship award

  • Not continue PhD work or training in the same lab as graduate work

Funding at a glance:

  • Four-year stipend totaling 292,000 USD, plus 8,000 USD in expense allowances

    • Year 1: $70K + $2K

    • Year 2: $72K + $2K

    • Year 3: $74K + $2K

    • Year 4: $76K + $2K

  • Up to $100,000 in medical school debt repayment over 4 years (MDs only)

  • $1,000/year dependent child allowance per child

  • No indirect or institutional overhead allowed

Award perks:

  • Attend Damon Runyon Fellows’ Retreats (Years 1 & 3)

  • Present at the St. Jude Pediatric Cancer Annual Meeting

  • Eligible for:

    • Jake Wetchler Award for Pediatric Innovation ($10,000)

    • Dale F. Frey Award for Breakthrough Scientists (competitive Year 4 boost)

Research focus:

Projects must be original and bold, not extensions of previous graduate work. Studies may be basic or clinical and should aim to advance understanding of pediatric cancer causes, mechanisms, therapies, or prevention.
