Clinical Research Radiation Oncology Fellowships

Clinical Research Radiation Oncology Fellowships are offered by BC Cancer – Vancouver in partnership with the University of British Columbia (UBC), beginning in 2026. These competitive fellowships are designed for physicians seeking advanced training in both clinical radiation oncology and research, tailored to their specific interests and departmental priorities.

BC Cancer provides care to a population of over 5 million people across British Columbia through six regional cancer centres. The Vancouver centre, a flagship facility, offers full-spectrum oncology services, robust academic programs, and state-of-the-art technology, making it one of Canada’s most comprehensive cancer centers.

Available Fellowship Opportunities at BC Cancer – Vancouver:

  1. Precision Radiation Therapy / Spine SABR Fellowship

    • Clinical training in extracranial SABR: liver, GI, spine, oligometastases, and other indications

    • Technical focus on OAR prioritization, retreatment, and complex SABR cases

    • Involvement in innovative research projects:

      • CPAP in lung/GI SABR

      • Preoperative SABR for cholangiocarcinoma and sarcoma

      • Tumor growth dynamics in oligomets using auto-segmentation

    • Opportunity to contribute to expanding spine SABR protocols

    • Participation in ongoing SABR clinical trials

  2. Quality Improvement (QI) Fellowship

    • Training in QI methodologies, project development, and implementation

    • Opportunity to attend ASCO Quality Symposium and Health Quality BC’s Quality Forum

    • Exposure to UBC PGME’s QI curriculum

    • Contribution to the department’s growing culture of integrated quality and safety

  3. Adaptive Radiotherapy Fellowship

    • Hands-on experience with new ETHOS adaptive radiotherapy systems

    • Active participation in evolving clinical trials and research in adaptive workflows

  4. Customized Clinical Fellowships

    • Flexible design based on candidate’s interests and department needs

    • Training available across disease sites, including:

      • Breast, Head & Neck, Genitourinary, Gastrointestinal, Pediatric Oncology, Lymphomas, and Brachytherapy

    • Possibility to integrate research in:

      • Medical education

      • Health equity and access

      • Indigenous cancer care

      • Planetary health and climate-sensitive oncology

      • Quality improvement

Eligibility Criteria:

  • MDs with completed Radiation Oncology residency suitable for independent practice in their home country

  • Research experience (basic or clinical) as demonstrated in CV

  • Educational license eligibility with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC

    • Candidates requiring English Language Proficiency testing are strongly encouraged to complete it before applying

Preferred Applicants:

  • Recently completed (within the last 3 years) Radiation Oncology training

  • Seeking a 1- or 2-year fellowship opportunity

  • Committed to a balance of clinical excellence and scholarly productivity

Registration & Supervision:
Fellows will be registered as Postgraduate Trainees at the University of British Columbia and supervised by faculty from both BC Cancer – Vancouver and UBC Radiation Oncology.
