AGA: 2025 Caroline Craig Augustyn & Damian Augustyn Award in Digestive Cancer

The AGA Research Foundation invites applications for the 2025 Caroline Craig Augustyn & Damian Augustyn Award in Digestive Cancer, offering vital support to early-career researchers already funded by career development grants. This $40,000 award is a supplemental boost for those working on transformative projects in the pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of digestive cancers.

Who is eligible?

Applicants must:

Hold an active NIH K-series or other federal/non-federal career development award (minimum 4-year duration) with at least one year remaining as of April 1, 2026
Not hold an R01 or equivalent award (e.g., VA Merit Award)
Possess an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree, and a full-time faculty position at an institution in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico
Be within 7 years of completing clinical training (for MDs) or receiving a PhD (for PhDs) as of April 2026
Be an AGA member at the time of application

This award is ideal for physician-scientists and applicants from underrepresented backgrounds in biomedical research.

Funding at a glance:

40,000 USD for one year
May be used for research personnel, supplies, biostatistics support, and necessary equipment (max $10,000 unless shared by the department)
Salary for PI or mentor, indirect costs, and travel expenses are not allowed

Research focus:

Projects must address digestive cancers and should build upon—but not duplicate—the applicant’s existing career development award. Proposals must show how the AGA funding will accelerate their path toward research independence.
