The Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund supports new and existing collaborations between researchers based in Africa and those at the University of Cambridge or its affiliated research institutes. Established through generous donations from The ALBORADA Trust, the fund fosters research partnerships and training initiatives across all academic disciplines, enabling sustainable engagement between Cambridge and African institutions.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applications must be jointly submitted by two researchers: one from an African university or research institution and one from the University of Cambridge or allied institutes (e.g., Sanger Institute, NIAB, Babraham Institute).

  • The African researcher may be based in any African country.

  • Projects may cover any academic subject area.

  • The collaboration should aim to generate new research links or strengthen existing ones between Cambridge and African institutions.

  • Eligible activities include research projects, training programs, and capacity-building initiatives.

Funding Details:

  • Typical awards are seed funds supporting early-stage research collaborations.

  • Grants also cover mobility awards of up to 10,000 GBP for graduating Cambridge-Africa PhD scholars to reconnect with research networks in Africa.

  • Since 2012, 367 awards have supported partnerships spanning 38 African countries.

  • Past awardees have leveraged their ALBORADA funding to secure additional grants from major bodies such as the Royal Society, Leverhulme Trust, and the Global Challenges Research Fund.

  • Annual application calls are announced through the Cambridge-Africa website. Applicants are encouraged to prepare proposals early in coordination with their Cambridge partners.
