The American Lung Association Innovation Award provides up to 75,000 USD per year for two years to support exceptional early-stage investigators who demonstrate high potential to advance the field of lung disease research. This award funds innovative projects that deepen understanding and lead to breakthroughs in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of lung disease.
Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DO, DSc, or equivalent).

Must have a full-time faculty or professional appointment at a U.S.-based nonprofit academic or research institution.

Must demonstrate institutional support (salary and research space).

Must have held a K or R-level grant within the five years preceding application.

Cannot have served as PI on three or more large federal research grants (e.g., R01, U01, P01, VA Merit).

Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Institution must be nonprofit and located in the U.S.
Funding Details:

Amount: 75,000 USD per year (up to 150,000 USD total).

Duration: 2 years (July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2028).

Up to 75% of funds may support salary and fringe benefits.

Up to 30% of total award budget may fund permanent equipment.

Indirect costs are not allowed.

Projects should focus on hypothesis-driven research that informs clinical practice or policy and advances lung health.
