Internal pilot funding at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC) to support promising new research by early-career faculty. The program supports two themes: (1) cancer-related pilot projects across basic, translational, and clinical research; and (2) cancer health disparities projects addressing underserved populations through clinical, control, behavioral, epidemiologic, health policy, health services, and basic science work.
Eligibility Criteria:

Junior faculty within 6 years of first independent appointment or equivalent (Instructor, Assistant Professor, Research Assistant Professor).

Not eligible if the applicant has already received a peer-reviewed national research grant (NIH K awards do not count as such).

Prior ACS-IRG awardees may not apply for a new project; they may seek a second year for the same project.

Residents and fellows are not eligible.

U.S. citizenship not required; non-citizens must hold a visa covering the full project period.
Funding Details:

Award: USD 40,000 total for 1 year; no indirect costs.

Allowable: research supplies; animal maintenance; technical assistance; necessary domestic travel; publication costs; computer time; special fees; graduate/postdoc stipends if supporting the junior PI’s project; equipment under USD 2,000 (items above require ACS approval); registration fees at scientific meetings.

Not allowable: PI salary; honoraria/travel for visiting lecturers; administrative/secretarial salaries; student tuition/fees; foreign travel (special consideration only for meetings in Canada); books/periodicals/memberships; office furniture/equipment/supplies; rental of office/lab space; recruiting/relocation; non-medical patient services; construction/renovation/maintenance.
