National Cancer Institute Youth Enjoy Science Research Education Program

This program supports institutional initiatives to engage grades 6–12 and undergraduate students (as well as teachers and undergraduate faculty) in mentored cancer research experiences. It also requires curriculum/methods development and outreach activities that foster long-term interest and retention in biomedical research careers. The goal is to inspire participants early and strengthen the biomedical research pipeline, particularly in cancer research.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Eligible organizations: U.S.-based higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profits, local/state/tribal governments, school districts, faith-based/community organizations, and regional organizations.

  • Foreign organizations and non-U.S. components are not eligible.

  • PD/PI: must be an established investigator capable of scientific and administrative leadership; multiple PDs/PIs allowed.

  • Mentors: must have relevant research expertise and commitment.

  • Participants: students in grades 6–12 and undergraduates (currently enrolled and in good standing), and teachers/faculty (currently employed teaching sciences). All must be U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals, or permanent residents.

Funding Details:

  • Direct costs: up to USD 400,000 per year.

  • Maximum project period: 5 years.

  • Personnel costs: up to USD 4,500 per participant per year for staff/consultant costs.

  • Program-related expenses: up to USD 1,500 per participant per year (e.g., lab supplies, poster costs, books, meeting travel, housing allowance up to USD 1,000 per participant).

  • Indirect costs: reimbursed at 8% of modified total direct costs.

  • No support for full-time (12-month continuous) participants.
