Burroughs Wellcome Fund — Career Awards for Medical Scientists

Five-year bridge awards supporting physician–scientists transitioning from fellowship/postdoc to independence. Up to USD 700,000 total; ~10 awards in the 2025–2026 cycle. Proposals in basic, disease-oriented, or translational research (not health services or large clinical trials).

Eligibility Criteria:

Degrees: MD, DO, DVM/VMD, or DDS; clinical training completed and board-eligible by start (Sep 1, 2026).
Career stage: up to ~2 years from independence; may hold certain junior non-tenure track titles but not a tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment at application.
Institutional: U.S. or Canada non-profit host; citizens and eligible visa holders in U.S./Canada may apply.
Not eligible if (among others) holding an NIH R01 or Early Independence awards (e.g., K99/R00, DP5) with a non-tenure track faculty post; award cannot overlap with K99/R00 or DP5 if those are later received.

Funding Details:

Total: USD 700,000 over 5 years; award is portable; indirect costs not allowed.
Effort: ≥75% of overall time to research.
Postdoc phase (optional, up to 2 yrs): salary+fringe capped at ~USD 90,000 (yr 1) and USD 95,000 (yr 2).
Faculty phase: up to ~USD 59,500/year for PI salary+fringe; up to USD 5,000/year caregiving support; equipment >USD 20,000 or travel >USD 8,000 need prior approval.

Portal opens: July 2025.
Full application due: October 7, 2025 (3:00 p.m. ET).
Status update: February 25, 2026; finalist interviews: March 17–18, 2026; notice: June 2026; start: September 1, 2026.
